Greetings Saints and Friends,
“Joey, where did you get that Swiss-army knife?” “Grandpa gave it to me. He said that he’s had one for over seventy years.” “Yes, he sure has. He uses it to accomplish many things and it never seems to wear out.” “That’s what he said to me, too. While he showed me each part of it, he explained what it’s used for, and how it reminds him of the Bible. Look, here’s the bottle-opener. Grandpa said it always opens a refreshing drink that he looks forward to drinking. It reminds him that Jesus said, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.’ John 7:37 Grandpa said that every person’s spiritual thirst can only be satisfied by Jesus. And every morning when he reads the Bible and talks to the Lord in prayer, he is refreshed for another day. And see, here is the screwdriver. There’s actually, two. Grandpa said they remind him that sometimes our attitude needs a little adjusting. He pointed to a plaque that hangs in his workshop with a Bible verse that says, ‘Whatever things are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, virtuous, and praiseworthy – think about these things.’” Philippians 4:8 “I wonder the difference it would make if most Christians had a little Biblical adjustment to their attitude. What’s that on the side?” “This is a pair of tweezers. Grandpa said, sometimes, like a splinter, little things in life can get under our skin. In the way we get ahold of the splinter with the tweezers, we should grasp our concerns with prayer and let the Lord do the work. Luke 18:1 He said whenever we can, we should be willing to help others with the little things in life, too. Encouraging words and brotherly love show them that we care.” “What is that piece that pulls out?” “This is a straightedge. We can use it to measure things and draw lines. Grandpa says we should measure everything by the Word of God, the Bible, because that is the highest standard there is.” 2 Timothy 3:16 “Is that one a saw blade?” “Yes, it is. And it sure saws! Grandpa picked up a piece of wood and sawed through it completely! He said, it reminds him that Jesus said sometimes there may be sin in our life that we have to deal with drastically. Matthew 5:29 We must deal with ‘all’ sin in our life, and the Lord will help us to do it.”
“It looks like there is more than one knife blade. They must have different purposes.” “Yes, they do. Look at this one. It has two edges, instead of just one. Grandpa said he can cut in both directions without even turning the blade around. He said as sharp and useful as it is, though, it reminds him that God’s Word is much sharper and cuts deeper. He said the Bible describes the Word of God as ‘living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. It is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.’ Hebrews 4:12 He told me that the Bible cuts through spiritual matters and exposes our thoughts and intents as good or bad, according to God’s Word.” “What does Grandpa use that next blade for?” “He said it is the one he uses most often. He calls it, the ‘sword of the Spirit’ blade. Every task he takes on can be compared to this blade and he will know how to handle the job. He said we can do the same when we look at anything through the lens of the Bible, because the ‘sword of the Spirit’ is the Word of God. Ephesians 6:17 The more we know the Bible, the more easily we can wield the sword of the spirit.” “Ouch! What does he think about this very sharp, pointed blade?” “Grandpa said, it reminds him that the Bible says, ‘All have sinned and deserve death. But God offers eternal life in Jesus.’” Romans 6:23 “If every person has sinned and deserves to die, how would you explain to someone that God offers eternal life in Jesus?” “I would tell them what the Bible says – ‘While we were still sinners, Jesus died ‘for’ us.’ Romans 5:8 Jesus died in our place so we would not be separated from God forever. That’s what Jesus said: ‘God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’” John 3:16
“If someone wants to trust Jesus as their Savior, because He died for their sins, how would you tell them to do it?” “I would tell them the truth – that God always hears when we tell Him – ‘Thank You, God, for loving me. And for sending Jesus to pay for my sins. Help me to live each day for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.’
Grandpa said, ‘The Bible is the Christians’ multi-purpose Swiss-Army knife.’”
