“And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.”
–Acts 17:11 (NLT)
My wife Stephanie and I just returned from a great weekend visiting my 91-year-old aunt in California. We were only able to stay one day, but we had a great time. On the trip home, we could think of nothing but the dentist appointment waiting for us the next day. We thought about rescheduling, so we could have a little time to recover after our whirlwind vacation. However, we decided to keep our appointment. Nobody likes a dentist visit very much, but we decided that tooth maintenance is important, so we kept our appointment.
Many times we believers don’t make the same decision regarding the word of God in our lives. We tend to undermine its importance, not testing all things according to what it says, and we don’t let its wisdom guide us. This, in turn, leads to the very real problem of “truth decay”. We start to take God’s word for granted, relegating it to the dusty shelf of our minds.
The way in which we live is a far cry from what the Bible teaches. Most of us say that we are too busy to study its pages, or we see Bible study as a duty that we can put off, just like our dentist appointment. But far from a duty, God’s word was designed to be a love letter to man, giving us light and direction.
In this book, God wants to uphold, guide and strengthen you, so let His word guide you in that all-important decision you have to make, or help you overcome that big problem in your life. Searching its pages will amaze you. God’s word has helped me out many times. Aside from this, it has also been a source of strength and support, even helping me find peace and joy when going through deep waters.
While the standards of this world are governed by moral relativism for the most part, God’s word is the embodiment of truth. So let God bless you in the Bible’s pages, and help you fight truth decay today!
